William Beckford - Vathek (HELP!!! )
#1
Hello all gothic fans! Smile

I'm writing with a request to anyone who would be able to help me. I am in the process of writing my thesis, and one of the chosen books is 'Vathek' by William Beckford. In the chapter devoted to this novel I wanted to describe it as an oriental gothic and compare it to the 'Occident' gothic (for example 'The castle of Otranto'). The problem is I can not find any additional literature which may be helpful in analysis of Vathek and in comparison of both types of gothic fiction. Would anyone help me and send me some titles which might be helpful in my thesis?

The structure of the chapter is :

The 'Oriental' Gothic vs. the 'Occident' Gothic ( I thought to compare 'Vathek' with 'The castle of Otranto')
Vathek as an Oriental Gothic (according to Said's Orientalism)

I will be grateful for any help Smile

Sorry, I am not familiar with Beckford or "Vathek".  Perhaps if you could tell us a little about Vathek, someone here may be able to help?

VATHEK is modeled on the ARABIAN NIGHTS and is certainly a piece of orientalism, but not really a gothic.

Vatek is considered the only representative of the "Gothic novel in the oriental scenery" -in his structure and the message he largely continues the "The Castle of Otranto" line.

You might already know this, but the writer of weird tales Clark Ashton Smith (1893–1961) wrote a "Third Episode of Vathek".  Both he and H. P. Lovecraft were admirers of Beckford.  The full story can be read here:
