Therefore, a "romance" back then would be any work that inspired emotion or an emotional response, regardless of what that emotion may be - whether love, hate, joy, nostalgia, fantasy, etc. Taken in that context, many classics would be considered "romances" and if there is a dark side to them, they should be considered "Gothic".
