I think the British authors wrote gothics differently in that they focused around spooky English manors and got to work with such gothicky places like Yorkshire and Cornwall (which, incidentally, means they drew inspiration directly from Jane Eyre and Rebecca, respectively). American gothic romance writers, of whom I think I haven't read very much of, tended to write more "romantic" and "dreamy". The settings may have been England, or Europe for that matter, but the romance between the hero and heroine was a bit softer than the Brits. But that's just my perspective.
