Wildthorn by Jane Eagland - Charybdis - 07-24-2011

Our heroine, Louisa, is in a carriage on her way to a post as companion to a wealthy girl. Seems like the start of a regular cookie cutter gothic romance, right? Fooled you! The carriage waits for some tall iron gates to be opened by a surly lodge-keeper. Louisa's chaperone hands over some papers to the gentleman who answers the door of the very imposing mansion. Louisa starts wondering what's up and is reluctant to leave the carriage. Another servant turns up and behaves threateningly, so Louisa is forced to enter the...... asylum!

I won't say anymore about the story; you'll need to read it yourself to find out what will happen and how it all came about. I will say that I've read the book in one day and loved every second of it.

So my verdict cannot be anything less than a 10 out of 10.

This is the author's first novel, inspired by true stories of women who were incarcerated in asylums in the nineteenth century.
