I remember a series of books (at least 3) in the mid-late 70's. The heroine, Anne, was a housekeeper. She grew up poor and married a rich man whom she met while she was housekeeping (or headmistress?) for a school. He died between books, but she kept having adventures. I know she was in Venice for one book.
You are talking about the "Moura" series by Virginia Coffman featuring Ann Wicklow who begins as a house keeper. There are a few books in the series. In "The dark beyond Moura" Anne goes to Venice to be the housekeeper for Elvira Huddle at an old stone mansion.
