This is charming Gothic Romance by Marilyn Ross (pseydonym of W.E. Daniel Ross), with serviceable ""story-teller" writing and wonderful trappings: Edwardian setting, a mansion, fog, ghosts (who may or may not be real) and even incestuous love between beautiful but villainous sister/brother pair. Heroine is sweet and sympathetic, trying to help innocent psychotic man accused of murder. There is even a dinner-table conversation of Jack the Ripper! Definitely 9/10.
Not sure about this one. All the elements that interest me are here, but... it's a Ross!

I've only seen a few of his books which are loosely based on Dark Shadows, and I thought, even as a teenager, that they were embarrassingly awful!

Still, ghosts that turn out maybe not to be ghosts, and bro/sis incest is a powerful draw. LOL

Oh, his writing is indeed clumsy! I think the story had really nice Gothic period atmosphere, I enjoyed it as entertainment, but.. well, you are warned! As storyteller he is at his best in this novel, as a writer he is.. well, Ross!
