John Harwood knows how to write. Lots of authors seem to think they'll come across as erudite by throwing in the odd four syllable word that most people are unfamiliar with. John Harwood doesn't need that. He weaves familiar words in such a way that he describes scenes and actions with the utmost accuracy and the smallest wordcount. His vivid imagination provides interesting stories to tell, so I think he could never write a bad novel.
In The Ghost Writer the main character is Gerard, who we follow from a young age through his twenties. His mother is stern and possessive; his father escapes in the garage playing with model trains. One day ten-year old Gerard discovers in a locked drawer a set of documents and the black and white photograph of a lovely lady. His mother catches him and beats the life out of him; after that she refuses to speak about her childhood home Staplefield ever again. Needless to say, Gerard becomes more and more obsessed to learn more about Staplefield. Gerard's life becomes better after he gets a penfriend, in whom he can confide all his ups and downs.
The story gets interrupted several times when Gerard finds copies of ghost stories that somehow are connected to his life. His mother tells him that one of these ghost stories has become real, but which one? If this clue hadn't been given early on, I would have skipped over these little novellas altogether. They weren't badly written, of course, but I don't much care for ghost stories and in this case I wanted my focus to remain on Gerard and his penfriend. Now I had to pay attention and keep the relationships between the numerous fictitious and/or real people straight. It was very well done, but not really my cup of tea. So these boring parts have their influence on my verdict, a 7 out of 10, but readers who don't mind multiple stories and like ghost stories will no doubt give a much higher mark.
