Creating a Best Gothic Romance List
#21
Sorry, I spaced on the 20th century requirement.

You're right about Jane Eyre. I checked a preface to Phantom and it says the book was written in 1911. So it still qualifies for the list. Yay!

Good. We'll move "Phantom" up to #33. Should we start a Classics list?

Was Jane Eyre a Gothic book? I read it before, but I didn't realize it was gothic.

Jane Eyre is the classic example of what most modern Gothic authors aim for.

33. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

34. Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

I'm no longer sure Phantom belongs under the category of Gothic Romance. I think it may be a Horror Gothic. Please see my post under Gothic Book Reviews for more.

I believe another person had listed something more along the lines of Horror Gothic. Since there was no distinction between the subtypes of Gothic for this list, you may leave Phantom on there. I just hope people don't start putting things on that are completely outside of Gothic, such as straight horror novels.

#35: The Gift Shop by Charlotte Armstrong. I've read others by Charlotte Armstrong and none seem strongly gothic, but I enjoyed the fast-paced suspense and humorous romance in "The Gift Shop."

#36: Do Not Disturb by Helen McCloy. See my review.

#37: The Town Cried Murder by Leslie Ford. Although written as a mystery, it has all the elements of a Gothic. I will write a review shortly.
