I've been known to pick up a book, based on its title, alone. I am often surprised, as a result. I credit gothics with causing this long-held havit. How can an eight-year-old resist a book called Light in the Swamp? :)
That must have been my first gothic read--although my grandmother wasn't too pleased when she asked to hear the book synopsis, and heard that the heroine had an affair! I still read the book, and wasn't corrupted for life. (I doubt it contained anything explicit, and if so, I didn't understand or retain it.)
Growing up, I read Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney, before moving on to romances (which I rarely touch, now), and general fiction, but I'm revisiting gothics, and hope to discover some gems.
Current favorite authors are Sarah Waters, Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine, Anita Brookner, Ellen Glasgow, M.E. Braddon...and too many others to list.
In the few minutes of my life when I am not reading, and daydreaming about what sort of book I'd like to write, I work from home (but that's not interesting), and play with the dogs. I am learning to play the accordion--it was a whim!--and that tends to torture the dogs! ;) I have a fairly quiet existence, and prefer it that way. |
