Gothics Set in 60s/70s? - Blaire - 01-01-2018

Hello everyone

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some gothics set in the 60s and 70s. I love books set in the Victorian era but I want to try some that are more "up to date" in their setting. (but nothing beyond the 70s)

Thank you

Phyllis A. Whitney wrote many excellent gothic romances set all over the world in the present day of her time, the 1950s-1980s. She is a writer of great renown who won many awards for her writing. You may download an author tribute including a biographical sketch, book list, discussions and book covers of representative works, and comments from readers on how Whitney touched their lives here:

I knew her personally, and have read almost all her works. She was a wonderful woman and writer.

I second the Whitney recommendation.  Florence Hurd wrote some readable Gothics set in the '60s and '70s.  There is also Virginia Coffman's Lucifer Cove series, set right around '69 or '70, naturally a bit dated and corny by today's tastes but I happen to enjoy that if I'm in the right mood.  Rona Randall and Jan Roffman were mentioned recently on this forum.

Thank you for the replies. Since reading them (the replies) I have managed to get hold of a couple Phyllis Whitney books (Snowfire and Spindrift) Smile

I discovered Whitney two years ago and haven't been disappointed, though I've yet to read the ones you've found. Good luck!
Mary Stewart might be another good option.

Thanks for mentioning Mary.  Really a brilliant writer in multiple genres.  The last book of hers I read was a very late novel, Rose Cottage.  It got mixed reviews but I think some readers were expecting a bigger story than it was intended to be.  Do you have any personal favorites?

I wanted to mention Mary Stewart as well. I liked Wildfire at Midnight, Madam, Will You Talk?, and My Brother Michael.

I've only read a few Mary Stewart so far: The Moon-Spinners, Wildfire at Midnight, and Thornyhold. All were good and I have a few more on my TBR shelf.
